The work Politics of Care refers to the literary sketch ‘Alberi Cittadini’ (City Trees) by the Italian writer Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936). In this short story, which alludes to the Industrial Revolution, Pirandello posits the displacement of trees in the city as symbolising the country-to-town migration of peasants. Alienated in their new environment, both suffer the loss of their habitat. Licari has made Perspex structures inspired by the metal tree guards one often sees in urban areas. Though these guards protect a tree’s roots, they also resemble prisons.
